Fix IDM Fake Serial Number Error
There are three methods to resolve IDM fake serial number error.
Method 1: Editing "Hosts" file
- First of all, Turn off Internet Connection and then try the below steps.
- Go to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and search for the "Hosts" file.
- Right-click on the "hosts" file, select properties and click the on security button than click on user Appears. A new window will be open, just select the "Users" and select "Full control" then apply and close.

- After finished, press (Ctrl+s) to save the file.
- Then Right-click the "Hosts" file and select "Properties" and tick the checkbox of "read-only."
- Just restart windows before open IDM.
Method 2: Cleaning "Regedit"
If the above method doesn’t work and you still face the fake serial key error, go ahead and try these steps.
- Click on the start menu or press “Windows Key + R” jointly from your keyboard to open the run dialogue box. Now type “Regedit” and hit enter.
- Now, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Download Manager, here you see “CheckUpdtVM“ or “StlmmMsg“. Double click to change the value from 1 to 0.
- If “CheckUpdtVM” does not exist, then right-click to create a new “String Value” with the name of “CheckUpdtVM” and set the value=0.
- Just restart your PC.
Method 3: Tweaking "idmBroker" file
- Navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Download Manager".
- Search and delete the "IDMGrHlp.exe" file.
- Now search for the file "idmBroker" right-click on the file and copy it then paste it there.
- Now rename the copied file of "idmBroker.exe" to "IDMGrHlp.exe."
- Restart your system to apply this effect.
